Safe and effective exercise is universally beneficial for all who do it, but most treatment centers are at a loss when it comes to providing an effective “fitness” solution. Recoveryfit fills this gap by providing professional recovery-based exercise groups to treatment centers that recognize the remarkable impact that a structured fitness program can have on the recovery outcomes of their clients.
How do my Client's Benefit?
“Physical activity helps manage moods, stress, and distress… 60 minutes per week of exercise can provide a recovering person with more than 50 health and mental health benefits. Exercise thus should be prescribed to all sedentary patients with addiction.” – Dr. James O. Prochaska
Recoveryfit’s comprehensive fitness program is especially beneficial and potentially life-saving for individuals seeking a life in recovery
Most people start an exercise program to look and feel better. In recovery, we now get the opportunity to nurture rather than neglect our bodies while we repair any damage done from neglect or even abuse
Physical activity can reverse the detrimental effects of stress and anxiety by increases in serotonin and dopamine levels in the body. Dopamine brings feelings of pleasure and provides a happiness boost based on action, while serotonin works to stabilize and regulate our moods. The combination of these “Happy Chemicals” can help reduce & regulate daily stressors and provide relief
Physical activity can help address the symptoms of depression by increasing endorphin levels in the body leading to an elevated mood. With high endorphin levels, we feel less pain & fewer negative effects of stress
Much of what occupied our thoughts and actions in the past were behaviors that proved to be destructive on many levels. In recovery, we get the opportunity to replace these destructive tendencies with healthy actions that nurture and enlarge our new lives
Contrary to what we might think, when we feel fatigue or low energy the action of taking physical activity will actually increase our energy levels
Exercise through the day can help increase more restful sleep by tiring the body and slowing the mind causing the body to seek sleep for recovery at night
When we do positive things for our body we feel better about ourselves. Exercise allows us to feel better mentally, emotionally, & physically and gives us a sense of our true potential in recovery
An exercise program will help create structure in a life, which may have previously been filled with havoc and chaos. We learn the discipline it takes to stay on track and in action
It is easy to see how physical activity could greatly increase recovery rates, but the more important understanding might be how not addressing physical health might be contributing to relapse
The 12 Principles of Recovery
The uniquely original aspect of Recoveryfit’s program lies in our ability to create a physical experience of 12 spiritual principles, providing a firsthand experience of the benefits of movement & activity & their connection to our lives & recovery
Where Can We Help?
Although many clients will be eager and excited about the Recoveryfit program, others may be hesistant, having never experienced the amazing feeling that comes after a good workout. These limiting beliefs may diminish their experience in our program, as well as prove to be major barriers to their overall success in treatment.
When clients have the option of non-participation we lose the valuable group dynamic. We cannot help people if they don’t show up, therefore, we will not make Recoveryfit available to any program where participation is not made mandatory for those clients capable and released for physical activity.
Primary Substance Use Disorder
Programs focused on a client base with a Primary Substance Use Disorder will find the Recoveryfit program extremely supportive in their client’s recovery success. Our program is based upon the 12 fundamental & universally beneficial principles of recovery. The application of these universal principles provides acceptance of these vital tools, regardless of whether or not clients all follow a 12-step program of recovery. We take an INCLUSIVE position rather than excluding clients with 12-step biases.
EXAMPLE: The Honesty Group examines how Powerlessness and Unmanageability has affected our lives. Clients are asked to take an HONEST ASSESSMENT of where they are at mentally and physically. It’s only through an HONEST EVALUATION that we can examine the damaging effect that addiction has had on our mind and body. We then look at how the powerlessness and unmanageability regarding their disease may have contributed to their current physical condition. All focus is then placed on accepting those facts without judgment and committing to progress and growth through the Recoveryfit program.
Primary Mental Health
This client population may or may not have substance use disorders and could feel like a group focused on the 12 Steps may not have direct application to their lives. For this reason, we offer a special Primary Mental health Recoveryfit cirriculum, focused solely on the 12 principles and how valuable the understanding and integration of these spiritual principles can be.
Although these universal principles are the basis for the 12 Steps, we explore just how groundbreaking true understanding can be in addressing the challenges we face in our “recovery.” We are all “recovering” at some level and need to develop “tools” to do so. Our Primary Mental Health groups offer a mental, spiritual, and then physical experience of these principles, increasing the positive impact that they can have on clients’ lives.
EXAMPLE: In our group on INTEGRITY we present the definition of the principle, what it can mean to their life in “recovery”, and what it might mean to their physical growth and recovery. Clients are asked to share areas in their lives where they feel integrity is essential, as we discuss functional ideas on how to get there. We then align Integrity with Accountability as we uncover ways in which accountability measures can actually help us stay in Integrity.
Communication of our goals is key to accountability and clients are each asked to share an attainable health & fitness goal that they will be accountable for at the next week’s group. Groups learn valuable tools that they are then asked to put into action, within the activity portion of the group and then their daily lives.
Adolescent Programs
Our Adolescent Program runs very similarly to our Primary Mental Health groups in that our focus is the implementation of the aforementioned spiritual principles in order to impact the client’s mental & physical progress and recovery.
For many adolescents, these principles may be entirely new concepts. As such, a simplified approach is taken and the application of the principles is geared towards our younger audience to include: parents, siblings, physical maturation, home life, school life and other challenges facing this population.
Group activities are scaled down to an appropriate level considering the intellectual & motor function of adolescents, and many of the movements are game-based to increase participation & enjoyment.
Recoveryfit Groups
Recoveryfit groups seamlessly fill the need for a physical component in treatment programming. We provide structured group fitness & exercise activity and connect the reasoning & results to recovery concepts. Clients receive firsthand experience of the numerous benefits that come from these actions and discover just how valuable they can be to their long-term happiness, progress & growth in recovery.
What does the Recoveryfit Program provide?
Through Recoveryfit groups your clients identify, explore, & experience:
- The Mental, Emotional, and Physical benefits that come from exercise & movement
- How these benefits aid their recovery treatment
- How each recovery principle applies to addiction recovery, as well as the client’s own physical recovery, repair, & progress
- Guided group discussion of recovery principles followed by scaled physical activity related to the lesson
- Real-life examples on how to incorporate both the principle and exercise concepts into their new lives in recovery
How is the exercise structured?
Recoveryfit groups combine aerobic, strength, and endurance activities. Each week’s class varies in method and modality, but is always inclusive for all fitness levels. Recoveryfit offers multiple difficulty variations for every exercise, so each person may choose their level of participation according to their ability.
The recovery process is experienced in a physical manner through exercise programming and pre-workout activities leading to a mental, physical & spiritual learning experience for the client.
How long are the groups?
Recoveryfit groups run 60 minutes in length: approximately 15-20 minutes of discussion followed by 40-45 minutes of structured group exercise.
What if I don’t have a gym space?
